The company was founded by Dan Munson - the previous founder of a mapping software company.  After buying a boat and moving to Florida, he became frustrated after waiting for bridges to open on the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and having to figure out what all of the different no wake zone signs said.  After searching for, and not finding, this information, he decided to build the WakeWatch app.
